An IoT-Serviced and Ontology-based Remote human digital Twin for physioTherapy – SORTT

Aging and unhealthy lifestyles contribute to high-risk metabolic conditions like obesity and type-2 diabetes. Europe is facing an epidemic of these disorders, and physical activity is crucial for improving motor performance and physiological/stress-related profiles in patients. However, preventive or adapted motor rehabilitation is currently limited to specialized centers with healthcare professionals, restricting access to a small portion of the population.

SORTT is a two-years research project funded by the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR) through the PRIN 2022 PNRR call, which proposes an innovative framework to enhance patient supervision by healthcare professionals, eliminating the need for costly infrastructures.

Our goal is to integrate real-time monitoring, motor training, and rehabilitation supervision directly at a patient’s home. SORTT introduces a novel approach to merge physio-metabolic data obtained remotely through IoT and edge computing technologies into an ontology-based knowledge representation system, aligning with the healthcare professional’s perspective on the patient.

This interdisciplinary project showcases advancements in rehabilitation, IoT, applied ontology, and AI for healthcare. Acting as a feasibility study and proof-of-concept, SORTT lays the groundwork for future funding and research endeavors.
